Almost a month after Abdullah and Ibrahim Mohamed El-Sharkawi were allegedly disappeared by Pakistani intelligence agencies, the brothers’ location were traced to a detention center.
On the 23rd of June, 2011, 17-year old Ibrahim gained his release through bail. His brother Abdullah, meanwhile, was located on July 23.
Abdullah was abducted in May 25. A few days after his disappearance, Ibrahim was also taken allegedly by intelligence agents.
According to accounts of Ibrahim to his family, he was abducted and kept in detention by the Federal Intelligence Agency (FIA) for several days. He was moved to another location in which he suffered severe beatings and sleep deprivation. He was also hanged by his wrists.
He was moved to the Adiala Jail after six days where he was detained with more than 50 child deteinees.
The family also learned about Abdullah’s whereabouts after he called them on the 23rd of July. He was also transferred to Adiala Jail and prior to his transfer, he was kept in secret detention and tortured by intelligence agencies.
The FIA charged Abdullah, Ibrahim and the rest of the El-Sharkawi brothers with illegal residency as stated in the Foreigners Act – Section 14.
The charges are being contested since the brothers by law are recognized as citizens of Pakistan in spite of their father’s Egyptian roots. Their citizenship is also confirmed through a ruling last January 2010 by the Peshawar High Court.
After Abdullah disappeared, the El-Sharkawi family decided to file a case at the government mandated Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances. However, since Abdullah has been located, the Commission no longer recognized the disappearance and expresses the responsibility to investigate the act is within the High Courts.
